The SPCA of Solano County has a new program. Well it isn’t brand new it is a few months old but it is gaining in popularity. Our pet therapy program which isn’t therapy for your dog or cat. It is the cats and dogs visiting with senior citizens at assisted living facilities. Some of the residents had to give up their pets when they moved into the homes for various reasons. Our program lets people hold a cat or dog in their lap and visit with our volunteers.
The pet therapy program was created by Derek Palm with assistance from Dr. Kelly Palm our shelter veterinarian. The program started out as a school project and has gained popularity with each week that has gone by. The program is run completely by volunteers and their own pets as well as a couple of the shelter pets who have proven to be fantastic lap sitters.
Are you interested in participating in our pet therapy program? You must attend our volunteer orientation and be a current volunteer and have a pet that passes our therapy suitability screening.
